I Can Make You Rich (Bantam press, 2007) is the latest in a series of Paul Mckenna’s self help guides. Using simple but effective neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) techniques and advice from the world’s most successful entrepreneurs, the book approaches this challenge from different angles. it includes a mind-programming CD to enhance the ideas in the book.
The book starts by exploring the (sometimes unconscious) obstacles to wealth that many people themselves create. McKenna tells the story of a friend who spent his money faster than he earned it. It came to light that when he was a child, this man’s mother had made a passing remark about how all rich people get heart attacks. This was internalised as ‘rich equals dead’.
Other blocks to realising financial freedom, such as lack of self-belief, are also examined. The author firmly believes that the human mind veers towards what it is focused on. Therefore if you reject the very idea that one day you could be worth far more than you are today, you will always make the same money as you do now. On the other hand, envisaging a brighter future creates a powerhouse of motivation to help accomplish your dream.
The difference between this approach and that of some other self-help guides is that whereas they are content to merely tell you that positive thought can change your life, McKenna provides you with simple but effective NLP and psychological techniques to get you thinking positively. This makes sense – after all, if you were an expert at thinking like this to begin with, you probably wouldn’t need a self –help guide.
The second part of I Can Make You Rich concentrates on how you actually go about starting up or building up your business. While it is not as specific as a business studies textbook, it is strong on helping you generate ideas. The author guides you in brainstorming what product or service you could offer, and suggests that you think of charging in terms of the worth that you or your product represents, rather than time spent.
As well using as his own business experience, Paul McKenna includes nuggets of wisdom from respected figures such as Dame Anita Roddick, Sir Phillip Green and Peter Jones. Perhaps most telling of all is McKenna’s assertion that if any of these people lost all their money, they would soon make it back – because of the rich mindset they have cultivated, their unshakeable belief in their ability to make money.
No book is going to make you rich - you have to do it yourself. However, this concise and easy to read guide empowers you to go out there and start fulfilling your dreams.
