Roberta Temes, Ph.D. has put together a wonderful self-help guide for handling grief and the process of bereavement. She is a highly versed psychotherapist who has written previous books, Living with an Empty Chair: A Guide Through Grief and The Tapping Cure, on the subject of death, dying and bereavement. Dr. Temes also has taught classes on the subject. Solace is a great book for those who are looking to make their way through the bereavement process. This book is also available as a Kindle edition. A Review of Solace Robert Temes, Ph. D., has thoughtfully crafted a self-help guide to grief that is easy to read and centered on readers who are now going through the process of grief. The chapters of this book all cover different aspects of grief and are made to be able to stand-alone. In fact, Dr. Temes encourages readers to read the chapters that pertain to their situations as they read them. This self-help guide is really geared to be as helpful as possible to those in grief, and Dr. Temes has taken into account that many in grief have trouble concentrating for long periods. The first chapter of Solace discusses in-depth the process of bereavement and its various stages. Dr. Temes lists the common reactions of each stage, and demonstrates the stages with stories from others who have been through the bereavement process. She completes the chapter with an easy to read chart for reference. Dr. Temes covers what should cause a reader concern in chapter two. This chapter covers the symptoms that should prompt getting help, and what is normally part of the grief process. She reaffirms, however, that everyone has their own individual reactions and how to know when those reactions have gone beyond the level of what is normal. Chapters three, four, and seven cover how to help oneself during this time of loss and how to get the help that one needs from others. Dr. Temes lists several options so that everyone can find something that is useful. Also, chapter four has very useful information and tips on how to get the help that is needed from others and how to handle those who mean well, but are not what the reader needs at this time. There are many bereavement groups listed for the benefit of the reader as well. Dr. Temes covers funerals and other remembrance rituals. Because these can be especially difficult for those in mourning, she gives tips of to whom a reader can go to for help with rituals, including funeral directors and clergy. This chapter also covers the sometimes-sensitive issue of religion in times of crisis. The personal stories in this section will be particularly useful to the reader. Also included is a chapter on how to help children handle grief. This is an issue for many parents, as it is difficult to know what to say and what not to say to a child. Dr. Temes gives many tips on how to discuss death with a child, and how children go through the bereavement process differently than an adult. Lastly, Dr. Temes covers the future. She discusses how to make sure that a reader can move past the grief process and into the future of the reader’s choice.
